My father's cousin, Christian Olson is a breeder of the Amalia Olson (1959). I have found "bits and pieces" of information about this peony on various web sites, but your site has been most fruitful thus far. I plan to contact the American Peony Society to see if they have additional information about the National Show in 1959 in which the Amalia was awarded a medal. If you have leads on where I might obtain additional information, please contact me Sir. I am working on my Family Tree and this topic is highly interesting to me because Christian had only an eighth-grade education yet he had the knowledge to breed this peony. He lived in the Abercrombie / Wahpeton, North Dakota area. He owned a farm along the Wild Rice River. He devoted about 1/4 acre of his farm to peonies. People would come from all around to pick the flowes for weddings and funerals. Christian would not accept money, he was gratified that people were interested in the flowers. My mother has told me that when the peonies were in bloom, you could smell them from a mile away, and that it was an absolutely beautiful sight. Somehow, professors at the University of North Dakota Agricultural College heard about Chistian and would come to him with questions and advice about creating / improving strains of wheat. Christian allowed them to use part of his farm to plant the new strain of wheat, which was more disease-resistant. His farm had the soil that the professors wanted to use to test the grain. In return, they allowed Christian to sell the seed to local farmers becuase it was so successful. Christian chose not to profit from the sale of the seed, only charge enough to cover his expenses. |
