LAURENCE (Lemoine, 1911) - Double - White - M.

LAVENDER (Saunders, 1939) - Single-Semi-Double -Double - Lilac - Hybrid. A strain. Beautiful pale lilac, becoming more delicate as the flower ages. May prove hard to grow. Albiflora x coriacea. List in Bulletin 129. Saunders 1955 catalog.

LAVENDER PINK (Franklin, 1931) - Double - Pink - Late. 34" high. Large. Full rose type, outstanding lilac color, with strong stems. Vigorous. Bulletin 47.

LA VERNE - Supposed to be Eugenie Verdier. The true name of this variety is not known. It was given by an American grower to a lot of peonies which he imported, and should not be attributed to Kelway, who never put out such an introduction. The name should not appear in catalogs or price lists. M.

LAVERNE CHRISTMAN (Brand, 1925) - Double - Pink. Tall. Very large. Deep pink or varied shadings Vigorous growth. Resemble Therese. M.

LA VESTALE (Calot, 1870) - Double - Lilac-White - DISCARDED. 1930 Wild catalog: Creamy-white, slightly tinged lilac and flecked crimson. Very double; tall and strong. M.

LA VICTOIRE - Double - Red - Early. Large flower of velvety deep rosy red. Chautauqua Flower-Field.

LA VOLUPTUEUSE (Guerin, 1861) - Double - Pink - M.

LEADING LADY (Bigger, 1955) - Double - White - Midseason. 30" tall. Delicately fragrant. Full rose type, slightly lit up with a creamy pink glow coming from deep down in a flower that is delicately fragrant. The attractively waved blue green foliage is clean, and on very stiff stems. Flowers fade to pure white if left out in the sun. Bulletin 138. Bigger 1955 catalog.

L'ECLATANTE (Calot, 1860) - Double - Red - M.

LE CYGNE (Lemoine, 1907) - Double - White - Early. Medium height. Moderate fragrance. Very large. White, tinged ivory, becoming pure white without markings as it develops; fairly floriferous; stems usually stiff, but occasionally lax at the base. Foliage large, dark green. Its broad overlapped, incurving petals and compact form make this one of the most perfect peonies, but the flowers are not always profusely borne, and they are not uniformly perfect. When good, it is the acme of quality, but there are some seasons when it is not up to standard. M.

LEE W. POLLOCK (Brand, 1936) Also listed as L. W. POLLOCK and DR. LEE W. POLLOCK. Double -Tyrian rose - Late midseason. Rich tyrian rose. Unique in color. Large and handsome. Lists in Bulletins 91 and 130.

LEE YOUNGBERG (Claar, 1956) - Single - Bright Rose - Early - Hybrid. 3' high. Large, cup-shaped clear, bright rose pink. Albiflora x lobata. Bulletins 139 and 140.

LEGIONNAIRE (Glasscock, 1928) - Single - Bright Red - Very Early - Hybrid. Odor almost lacking. Single with Japanese effect. Medium size. Form of bud round, medium stiff stems. Foliage narrow light green. Blooms a week earlier than Officinalis Rubra. Albiflora x officinalis. Bulletin 35.

LEGION OF HONOR (Saunders, 1941) - Single/semi-double. Red - Hybrid. Flaming cherry scarlet, with very light green foliage. Albiflora x officinalis. Lists in Bulletins 91 and 129. Saunders 1955 catalog.

LE JOUR (Shaylor, 1915) - Single - White - Early Midseason. Tall. Fragrance not notable. Very large. White, with two rows of long, wide, overlapping petals; center, a broad ring of golden yellow stamens about a group of reddish carpels tipped darker and having a pink line at the base. Very floriferous; strong, erect stems. Good foliage. M.

L'ETINCELANTE (Dessert, 1905) - Single - Pink - Midseason. Tall. Fragrance not notable. Very large. Cupped flowers of very bright pink, each petal having a lighter, almost silvery border; stamens bright golden yellow; floriferous; stiff stems. Excellent foliage. An excellent single pink peony of large size and pure color; well regarded, not expensive, and very popular. M.

LETITIA (Kelway) - Single - Rose - M.

LETO (Neeley, 1930) Formerly named CHARMER, MOONLIGHT MIST, FAIRY DREAM. Jap. - White – Mid-season. Tall. Large flowers with white guards, rather broad staminodes, yellow fading white deeply notched and fringed. Carpels tipped white. Excellent. List in Bulletin 91.
