Paeonia x waddickii

type: [herbaceous peony] – [herbaceous hybrid]

history:

In May 2001 I collected pollen on the natural site of P. mascula ssp. bodurii in the Canakkale prov. of Turkey. A handful of friends in the USA, Canada and Germany were sent fresh pollen – and the first seeds arrived me from Dr. James Waddick of Kansas City in August the same year! He had pollinated the Paeonia peregrina in his garden with my pollen. All seeds were sent back to me by him. The seeds showed germination in March 2002 and I planted out two seedlings in September 2002. One survived and grew to flowering size until 2006. On June 8th 2006 it flowered for the first time. The first „tricontinental“ hybrid – pollen from Asia, motherplant in the USA, seeds grown in a garden in Germany.

detail showing the hairy leaf-undersides, which proves me that it is a hybrid, as P.peregrina is completely hairless and Bodurii is very hairy
