Hi everyone,

Dr. Gallop has given me permission to forward on to you this e-mail that was sent to the Lilium list. The story of the peony 'Jean Erickson' is at: http://www.hollandiabulbs.ca/innovations.htm Linda Goh

Dear friends, It is with great sadness, that I learned last night from Nigel Strohman, of the Lily Nook, Neepawa, MB, of the death of a dear old friend of many of us, near and far, over many years, Mrs Jean Ericksen, at about 95, in a Saskatchewan Seniors residence, this week. Messages of Condolence to her family, may be sent c/o Moose Mountain Lodge, Carlyle, Saskatchewan, S0C OR0, Canada

She was a grand lady, a famous Prairie breeder of Lilies (including Martagons), Peonies and other plants over her long active lifetime; and always so generous in sharing her vast detailed knowledge, enthusiasm, plant materials, and simple hospitality, with so many of us. To the last, she retained her full memory, and always could tell us of the parentage of so many lilies, and who of her time, had bred them, when, where, and how.

Just a few weeks ago, she was presented with another of many Awards, the NALS Medal, by a Saskatchewan Lily Society, for her great contributions to Liliums and to us all.

She and I kept in touch, and to help her overcome her great frustration, at having to leave her beloved homestead farm gardens, in old age, I have been sending her Martagon seed lots in recent years, for her to send to the RHS Lilium Group Seed List, so that she could continue to keep her long associations with that body. More than ever now, I shall treasure the rare lilies and one of her best peonie seedlings, that she gave me, when I visited her, with Dick Kammer, on the way back from the Saskatoon NALS Events a few years ago.

Her correspondents all appreciated her novel , long letters, full of interesting items, from her fertile mind, firm clear views, great enthusiasm for life, and impish sense of humour. I was trying to reply to her recent letters to me, when I heard the sad news last night.

We will all miss her presence and efforts very much. Her Funeral is next Tuesday, in Carlyle, Saskatchewan. She will remain in our thougts and prayers always. R.I.P.
