Tiguri, Orell, Gessner, Fuesslin & Socios, 1773. Folio. pp. (8), 83, (1), with 28 engraved plates.

Stafleu & Cowan 2102; Nissen BBI, 741. A very attractively produced work, printed in Zürich, with excellent plates drawn by the author. "Antoine Gouan (1733-1821) became the doyen of the Linnaean taxonomy in France. He was the first to introduce binary nomenclature in the country and to publish a flora which was almost fully Linnaean. ... Gouan lived to the age of 88, but his published output diminished gradually after his 'Illustrationes et observationes botanicae' of 1773. His Montpellier school of taxonomists, however, produced several of the most important French Linnaeans" (Stafleu. Linnaeus and the Linnaeans pp. 269-271). The plates figure mostly plants of the Pyrenees. The work was published in Zürich, as Albrecht von Haller subsidized the publication.
