Paeonia 'Sonata'

type: [herbaceous peony] – [species cultivar] – [lactiflora]

origination:

Copeland

SONATA (Harold Copeland—now deceased early 1970's, Chatham, Massachusetts). Parentage, Tamate-Boku and Isani-Gidui. Not certain which was the seed or which was the pollen parent. First bloomed in the late 1950's. Japanese type with buds opening to blush pink and gradually paling to almost white. Most reliable with good substance, strong stems holding up in wet and windy conditions. Outstanding vigor, blooms in mid-season. Foliage complements the delicate color. These shell pink flowers measure nine inches across with a mass of yellow staminodes in the center. (David M. Smith, Director of Horticulture, White Flower Farm, Litchfield, Connecticut 06759. Bulletin #269.
